Mount Kilimanjaro

At 5895 meters above sea level (and 4900 meters above its base), Mount Kilimanjaro is the world’s tallest free-standing peak and the highest mountain in the world.

Mount Kilimanjaro is a standalone mountain that is not a part of any mountain range, hence the term “Free-standing.” Higher mountains than Kilimanjaro can be found in many different mountain ranges

Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa, is one of the seven peaks. The tallest peak on each continent is one of the seven summits.

In Northern Tanzania, Kilimanjaro is around 80 kilometers from the well-known city of Arusha. In Mount Kilimanjaro National Park, you can find Mount Kilimanjaro. Most visitors to the mountain arrive by plane at Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking Routes

Machame Route

Distance: 61km / 6 – 7 Days

One of the more beautiful paths to the top of Kilimanjaro is the Machame Route. It is also referred to as the “Whiskey Route” since it is more difficult than the Marangu (Coca-Cola) Route. The climb is more challenging, but it is considerably more successful than the Marangu path.

There are six day and seven day itinerary alternatives; the seven day schedule is recommended because it allows you an additional day of acclimatization. The path includes several ups and downs, including scaling the Barranco Wall, and some steep sections. But The Machame Route is probably doable with the appropriate planning.

As you travel through four different climate zones and take in sights like the Shira Plateau and the Lava Tower, the scenery is breathtaking. This route allows you to ascend high and sleep low, which is great for acclimatization. Additionally, it is the path we travel to reach the top of Africa.

The northern circuit.

Distance: 88km / 8 – 9 Days

This climb has one of the greatest success percentages and is the longest to the summit of Kilimanjaro. The journey lasts either eight or nine days, and there are many opportunities to climb high and sleep low, which is perfect for acclimatization.

The first two days of the walk are spent traveling along the Lemosho path, which begins west of the peak. The path then takes a northerly turn close to Lava Tower and circles the mountain to the summit.

Regardless of the path you choose, you should always be well-prepared before attempting Kilimanjaro. Make sure you have the necessary equipment, have received enough training in advance, and have the backing of knowledgeable porters and guides. Acute Mountain Sickness, which can be extremely severe, is one of the many difficulties that might arise when climbing Kilimanjaro. This is mainly because of the mountain’s great elevation.

The Marangu Route

70 kilometers; 5 to 6 days;

Due to its popularity and the fact that Coca-Cola used to be sold in every hut along the road, the Marangu road is often referred to as the “tourist route” or “Coca Cola Route.” This is one of the simpler routes up the mountain because it climbs at a steady, progressive rate up until the final night, when the gradient sharply rises.

Due to the five-day climb’s insufficient acclimatization time, the route has a low success rate. Additionally, the Marangu Route draws a lot of inexperienced and untrained tourists, which forces many hikers to return before reaching Uhuru Peak.

The Shira Route

6–7 days and 58 km of distance

Lemosho is the starting point for the Shira Route, which likewise starts on the western side of Kilimanjaro but at a greater altitude. The first day of the journey follows a four-wheel drive path, making it possible to drive or hike it. However, since you will begin the climb at a height of more than 3,500m, driving will shorten the time it takes for your body to acclimate.

You should be confident in your ability to hike because the Shira Route can be finished in six or seven days. The path is more expensive but has fewer travelers than the Machame Trail.
